"A gun's appearance has very little influence on its operation, but it can drastically alter how it's perceived. Scary black guns do exactly the same job as more traditional ones...they just look better doing it."

Tutorial for Shotguns

Shotguns are mid to close range firearms that fire either buckshot rounds or solid slug rounds. Shotguns are notorious for their slow rate of fire, poor accuracy, immense recoil and high projectile drop, often requiring a near-perfect sight alignment and small distance to the target to score the most hits with the pellets of a buckshot or a perfect hit with a single slug. However, the damage output of a shotgun balances out the slow rate of fire, for example, if all/most pellets of a buckshot are to strike a player/mob, it has an extremely high one-shot-kill potential, but this scenario can only occur when the user is very close to the target.

Some shotguns like the SPAS-12 or the Remington 870 loads in shells one by one, making reload dangerously slow, leaving the user vulnerable for a long period of time. This can be combated however, if the user is to carry a backup handgun which can defend the user when attacked by another player.

Magazine-fed shotguns are the best option for players who loves to dispense rounds quickly, shotguns like the SAIGA-12 or the USAS-12 feature magazine feed, with significantly speeds up the reload speed. Enabling the user get back into action faster when their cartridge is depleted.
